It's the fittings around the sensor that may not be interchangeable, that's why you need the kit. My suggestion is to open up your machine and take a look at the actual sensor and part numbers. I found that my part numbers were different from those I was told to purchase. My original part numbers were also not a match for the machine they came in according to most appliance part stores. There's a few good videos on you tube to fix this yourself. It was relatively easy for me, being pregnant with 3 other children running around as I repaired the machines. Just be careful with the part. It is plastic and will break easily.
