It filters, it takes out stuff that shouldn't be there, and it keeps out the gunk. :>) The item is a blue plastic holder about 1 cm in thickness, containing what appear to be LARGE (4-5 mm) "granules" of carbonaceous something or other (it's black stuff) sandwiched between wads of thin (probably polyester) filament/wadding. I had one filter I rinsed every few weeks and re-inserted, doing so for the past year. I just switched it for a new filter. Why, I'm not sure. My cat didn't say anything about the switch; he's pretty low key about these things. The filter is fine for filtering out floating junk and hair, which is what the polyester wadding does. I'm not convinced that the carbon granules accomplish much, as they do not present a thorough "barrier" through which the water must pass.
