Before installing, I did soak the filter in water for about 5 - 10 minutes. Once installed, no leaks. Easy peasy. (I also date my filters with a sharpie, so I'll know (remember) when I installed the unit.) 11/10/2015 Update: I reordered this part after the old one provided a year of service. Unfortunately, the new one did not connect securely and water would not flow through the filter. After closer examination, I noticed that the insert on the "new" filter was different from the older model. I have no idea why they changed it, but it will not work. (See attached pictures.) Note that the filter with the blue "x" is the one that did work. I've sent this one back and ordered a genuine GE replacement... $ 11.00 more, but it should work; I hope. ;)

I had zero problems with it and the price was excellent. I will definitely buy this again Works perfectly. I did soak it in water for several minutes prior to installing it in the refrigerator after reading online stories of water squirting out when replacement filters are placed inside the fridge.
