Wanting to get away from the "white dust" of the cool mist style units, we ordered this highly rated evaporative unit. Does it work? - to some degree. It does add moisture to the air but nowhere near what CR stated. In just the master bedroom it cannot get the humidity level above 30% in dry winter (starting from about 19% humidity). Pluses: its quiet, easy to fill, no "dust". Minuses: silly design of lights (why a bright red power light when it also has a large blue lit LCD screen)? No water empty indicator, Humidstat appears grossly inaccurate - seldom turns off. We keep using it as a "manual" unit since it avoids the "dust" but have to kick on an ultrasonic unit (also SPT) that really pumps out moisture- but brings back the dreaded "dust" (we have very high calcium in our city water).

I knew my tap water was good but its very good 59ppm out of the tap not bad. So it keeps my fish tanks in the safe range for my dwarf shrimp. I LOVE that I can get a good read on my tanks Temps. That was a big selling point for me. I not sure when I will have go calibrate it but it should not be hard to do. So far straight out of the box it's been great. I recommend this TDS metter for fish keepers.

Update: I have realized that there is a HM Digital TDS-4 Total Dissolved Solids Pocket Size Meter unit available on amazon for just a couple of dollars more than this unit. From what I can gather, the TDS-4 is essentially the same unit but has temperature compensation circuitry that does not exist in the HM TDS-EZ. I did a simple test to see if I could quantify the temperature effect. The effect appears substantial. I am reducing my rating from 5 down to 3. Here are my results using the same sample of tap water at different temperatures: 54 degrees: 220ppm 100 degrees: 404ppm 112 degrees: 434ppm 130 degrees: 540ppm Plotting this on a graph reveals a linear variation.
