It generates a little (not a lot) of white noise - which you may/may not prefer, but we think is a plus. The mist comes out of the holes over the eyeballs, so it goes straight up in the air to fill the room. You use the knob to control the rate - the instructions say to turn it on high and then turn back until it only goes up instead of down to make sure you get the right amount. We run only at night and refill every 2-3 days. It is filter-less, and is the easiest humidifier I've ever cleaned! I do recommend the additional blue purifier; it screws in where the cap goes, so very easy. And for those wondering, our toddler knows it's a frog, but he doesn't play with it like we worried he would. I wish they had a non-animal version for our room! If you need a humidifier for a child, I highly recommend this product!
