I've been using either filtered (from my refrigerator pure-source filter) or 5-gallon jug distilled water from the beginning. For the price of these filters I can either replace my refrigerator filter annually (which has 2,000 gallon capacity) or buy 50 gallons of distilled water. I've tested the PPM of water in all scenarios and to no surprise these coffee water pre-filters have not even 1 PPM impact when using pre-filtered or distilled water. Not a single difference is detectable with my HyGro TDS meter. Tap water (in my area is ~150) lost 25 PPM running through the pre-filter. 25 PPM isn't going to prevent corrosion or scale inside your machine and it certainly isn't going to have a significant impact on the flavor of your espresso. I was going to get them until I realize than instead of paying $37 here I can buy them for 26% less at $29.99 at www dot breville dot com I've bought all other Breville accesories here at Amazon, but this one doesn't make sense buying it here.
