Attack of the clones
As far as I can tell, these are exactly the same as the ones that come in the box with the Mr. Coffee machine. Cutting one in half, there's a filter paper layer, then what appears to be an activated carbon impregnated felt layer (it dusted a white sheet of paper just like aquarium filter media would) and then another paper layer.
If you're using filtered water for brewing or cheap, strong coffee it might not even be needed but even then it keeps coffee and grounds from splashing back up onto the brew head. Since I use tap water and a medium roast / medium grind I "think" it makes a difference when I put a new filter in.

Great price - but water just pools in filter then spills over sides when it overflows. The water doesn't actually get filtered :
The price on these is fabulous - however...they don't actually filter the water. The water just pools in the filter then spills over the sides - so if you don't actually look at the filter after brewing, you'll think you're getting filtered water. I tested it again to make sure it wasn't just my imagination, and filled it with water....a half hour later the water was still sitting in the filter. I also flipped it around to see if that was the issue. You can see in the photo that the water is just sitting in the filter and not dripping through.
