Cutting one in half, there's a filter paper layer, then what appears to be an activated carbon impregnated felt layer (it dusted a white sheet of paper just like aquarium filter media would) and then another paper layer. If you're using filtered water for brewing or cheap, strong coffee it might not even be needed but even then it keeps coffee and grounds from splashing back up onto the brew head. Since I use tap water and a medium roast / medium grind I "think" it makes a difference when I put a new filter in.
