As others have said, this item is necessary when the original breaks or is lost. Mine broke, and it took a lot of effort to get the current filter out of the refrigerator. This makes it simple once again. However, Whirlpool really should be ashamed for charging so much for a piece of molded plastic. Give us a break, Whirlpool/KitchenAid/etc., and we'll be more likely to choose another Whirlpool family product. Other than this, I've been completely happy with my KitchenAid refrigerator for nearly six years. Thank you (mostly), Whirlpool!
