Filters the water It wasn't the original manufacturer so I was a bit hesitant to order -- fits an older Whirlpool Gold with not problems. Does it filter the water? IDK. I guess you just have to trust the manufacturer or somehow test the water. Water in AZ is pretty heavy with calcium and other particulates that you can 'taste' when you drink straight out of the faucet. The water that is dispensed is free from smell and that faucet taste so I am going to say that it is filtering. Made overseas but that doesn't make it any less trustworthy than made here I suppose. Price is half of what big box hardware store charges.
