Who can resist a "5-year filter"? However, after getting the filter's specs from the manufacturer, I decided against it and went for the Filtrete 3US-PS01/3US-PF01 instead. The specifications leaflet that is included with this filter states the filter reduces aesthetic chlorine by 77%. It is only NSF tested and certified for chlorine reduction. It doesn't show test results for reduction of class 1 or class 5 particulates or for any other parameter. I do not know where the "bacteriostatic" description in this Amazon listing came from since there is nothing in the specifications leaflet that indicates the filter is bacteriostatic. My primary reason in using a water filter is to reduce chlorine and class 1 (0.5 to 1 micron)particles. The Watts Premier filter reduces chlorine by only 77% while Filtrete 3US-PS01/3US-PF01 reduces chlorine by 96.6%(NSF reduction requirement is >/= 50%). Fantastic Filter After a month of use to get it broken in I believe I can share my brief experience with this filter. First off, installation was really easy. Less than 30 minutes (don't forget to 'flush' it for five minutes). The water I had previously smelled and tasted like pool water. It seemed to have a more than acceptable amount of chlorine going by smell alone. As soon as I plugged this filter in instantly odorless tasteless water came out. Also, very recently some maintenance was done to the city pipes turning all the water in the house brown for a short while. Sinks, toilets, hose, everything that is except the fridge attached to this filter was clearly brown. Hands down side by side comparison this filter does an awesome job. If you want a better sense of security and want to remove the nasties that end up in your water get this filter.

Filtered water tastes "refreshing" We had two kinds of flakes in the water from our fridge: 1) Translucent flakes that floated; and 2) White flakes that sank. Thawed ice-cubes from the ice-maker had both kinds of flakes, and like the water it smelled terrible and was undrinkable. Thinking the translucent flakes may have resulted from bacterial/algal biofilms in the lines and the white flakes were mineral deposits, we changed the filter within the fridge, and ran gallons of water through the new filter. This didn't help - the translucent flakes never disappeared and the white flakes came back 2-3 days. Ice-cubes remained as bad as they were before (here too, I dumped at least 10-15 loads of ice made over 2 weeks).
