Usually within 2 years, the carbon filter is so laden that it emits a rather foul smelling odor. I really wish they would use a higher quality carbon to get more absorptive time. This is true for both the healthmate junior as well as the healthmate. As a matter of fact on the last go around in which I got a pro-rated credit they recommended that I not get the carbon filter. I am guessing that is because without the telltale smell, you can't tell when the filter is not longer working effectively and you have to assume it lasts 5 years.

You can find a HEPA filter that is less expensive, but I recommend spending the extra for the xeolite/charcoal filter that also has a HEPA filter stage. Yes, they really do work for up to 5 years, especially if you take them apart and clean the pre-filter once a year. I like to note on the bottom in marker when I last changed the filter and when I last cleaned the pre-filter. They help with Austin Tx cedar fever, mold spores and even the ragweed pollen when it comes out. I can turn them down to silent mode most of the year, and only crank them up to high when the allergies attack. Very worthwhile.
