The power cord is substantially heavy, the shut off when water reaches a full rolling boil works well with an audible click and the blue charming glow light for the water goes off when the pot automatically shuts down. I use pot this to heat water for French Press coffee making and the all glass contact with water is completely clean. You can click or lift the top up if you don't want the mesh filter to touch the water when filling or pouring if you are a real purist. The pot has no smells on first use or thereafter. It deserves the 5 stars more so than much more expensive pots.

I really wanted to be able to keep this kettle, but it is DANGEROUS. When the kettle is more than 1/2 full, steam collects around the power button. This causes the button to get very hot and then jam, which means the kettle cannot shut off once the water is boiling. Thanks to Amazon, though, for an easy and free return process.

very disappointed There are many electric kettles out there to choose from. I chose this one primarily because it is glass--I like to watch the water boiling, and it was very reasonably priced. I have now been using it for over 6 months and I still really like it: I would be willing to say that it has exceeded my expectations. The water isn't touching any plastic, the construction is quite good especially the cord. The automatic shut off feature has never failed, it comes to a rolling boil--plenty hot enough for loose leaf black teas. It even has a ring of light around the base while the water is boiling, so it is all lit up and cheerful. The only negative comment I can make is that the thin red decorative strip around the lid is lifting where it's closest to the spout. Not a functional issue at all, and I'm only mentioning it because otherwise this review might sound too good to be true. I'm very happy with my purchase and would recommend this to anyone considering a new kettle...
