We've lived in multiple countries on several continents over the past 10+ years and used our Travel Berkey on a daily basis. We frequently cleaned the ceramic filters per the instructions. How frequently we needed to clean them depended on water quality and climate. The warmer the climate, the more often we needed to clean them. Over time, the constant cleaning visibly wore down the ceramic, but they lasted us ten years, which is an exceptionally long time for a water filter - and far beyond their stated life span from the manufacturer. So, yes, they are expensive, and they are fragile (if you drop them, they WILL break), but if you take care of them, I feel they are the most effective and economical water filters for long term use.

At the core of the sub-micron ceramic filter is the most basic of elements: Diatomaceous Earth. This is the same substance, which artisans refine into exquisite porcelain and pottery. The microscopic pores of the ceramic filter element make it an extremely efficient filter for the reduction of particulate matter, pathogenic bacteria and fine sediment from water. Minute particulate matter will quickly plug media style filters, but the ceramics have the added benefit of being re-cleanable and re-useable. The Super Sterasyl element, used in Berkey systems, utilizes the latest technological advances of ceramic filtration by incorporating pure silver impregnation into the porous ceramic shell to inhibit the growth of bacteria. Furthermore, the Super Sterasyl ceramic filter elements contain activated carbon, which reduces unwanted chemical and organic compounds from the water while also improving taste. Each filter can be cleaned many, many times before needing replacement. If using tap water, the filters will normally only need to be cleaned every 6 months. You will know when your filters need to be cleaned because the filtration rate will slow down. To clean, simply rub the filters with a scotch-brite pad under running water (as in the picture above). Great product: Absolutely better than the black filters! These filters are so much better than the black Berkey filters. For the price of two black filters you can four of these filters which are better made in my opinion. To set these filters up takes only a few moments, although you have to let it seat overnight to use it after the first setup. I had no issue with that because setting up the black filters which work immediately was such a major pain. If you get this you won't regret it:).
