This is one that can be used with 'hot ashes' or a few coals still in the box. One set easily lasts a season but I've been able to use longer by removing and blowing them out with an air compressor. The only problem I've ever had was my fault, letting the can get too full of ash and one of the coals came to rest against the filter and burned a hole. Otherwise they have been flawless.

Always have a spare! I bought an additional filter kit when I purchased my Cougar vac (reviewed elsewhere). Since I have no local vendor I don't want to be without my vac for a week if a filter goes bad. So far, after three months of use three to four days per week, the original filters don't show any wear at all and absolutely no dust or ash comes out of the vac, so I'll go out on a limb and give them a five-star rating. I'll update later if the rating is undeserved. Update, 4 July 2014. I'm still using the original filters after nearly three years of 8-month winters. I did discover that the ultrafine ash will make it through the outer filter to the inner filter, so when suction drops off be sure to clean both with warm water and soap. The foam filters under the outside top cover can also be easily accessed by removing the phillips head screws and popping the cover off. This shouldn't be necessary, however, unless you neglect the main filters too long. These are definitely quality filters!
